WHERE IT ALL STARTED… 20 YEARS AGO

The Australasian Team Roping Association (ATRA) was officially formed in October 2006, following a meeting in a truck at Warwick Rodeo to discuss the purchase of the Australian Team Roping Championships (ARTC), a privately owned organisation established by Lachlan Hornery.

The vision for ATRA was clear — to create a not-for-profit, member-based association representing team roping across Australia and New Zealand. The goal was to provide an inclusive, friendly and affordable place to compete, welcoming riders of any age, male or female, on horses young or old.

One of the key foundations introduced was the classification system, allowing ropers to compete in numbered events based on skill level, ensuring fair competition and opportunities for all members.

The early tour began at Ian and Netta Wharton’s “Thornhill” property near Gunnedah, NSW, where jackpots started to build momentum. What began as a small number of events quickly grew, and by the 2010–2011 season, around 50 jackpots were being held annually across Australia.

ATRA has always prided itself on being a member-run association, with promoters hosting events in their own arenas or local showgrounds to maximise prize money and opportunities for competitors.

Today, the association continues to grow, with jackpots held across Australia and the highly anticipated ATRA National Finals, where competitors rope for major prizes including buckles, saddles, prize money and horse trailers.

As we celebrate 20 years of ATRA, we recognise the vision, dedication and passion of the many volunteers, competitors and supporters who helped build the association into what it is today.
